Thinking Beyond Borders - Gap Year Programs with Purpose

Basketball in China: TBB %#39;10 students Marianna Brady and Jonny Reindollar created this short film to explore the role of basketball in youth culture in Kunming, China

Education is the keystone of development. Your group will explore how education can empower individuals and communities with the knowledge to treat disease, produce goods, and support effective government. You'll investigate how an exploding economy educates its youth. Your group will observe and volunteer in a middle school in Kunming, an ethnically diverse city of 5 million people. You'll visit a rural farming community and its schools for a contrast to the urban experience.

You'll experience tai chi in city parks at dawn, traditional dances in rural villages, and the remarkable generosity of the Chinese. Through visits to temples and other cultural sites in the region, you'll encounter the cultures of over 50 Central Asian minority groups.

Travel to Cambodia and visit Angkor Wat, one of the world's most famous temples. Cambodia is a unique combination of Buddhism, temples, natural beauty, and a 20-year war that cast a shadow over the entire country. Now a very safe destination, Cambodia's rich heritage provides a truly unique experience. The World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat has become a national symbol. You'll visit the incredible Khmer architecture and wander the expansive grounds. You'll tour the powerful museums of the country's recent history in Phnom Penh.

"The time away from the classroom renewed her energy for school, and she was eager to get to college. She has jumped in full force with many academic interests, but she's also ready to participate in extra curricular activities."
